Setsuo Arikawa President, Kyushu University The East Asian Environmental Problems Project operated by Kyushu University, which was initiated in September 2007 as part of the events held to mark the 100th anniversary of the university, was reorganized as the Research Institute for East Asia Environments (RIEAE) in April 2009. Through RIEAE, Kyushu University proposes what we, as a nation, have to do as a member of the community of East Asian countries, and aims at providing practical solutions for environmental issues in international cooperation with industry, government, and academia.  Currently, the entire world, especially the East Asian region, is facing serious environmental damage. This damage involves various issues including air pollution, river and marine pollution, waste problems, and food contamination—issues too numerous to innumerate in full—and which is far beyond an individual researcher's capability to address. Integrating relevant members of the university as a organization through the cooperation of relevant research institutes as well as the support of private companies, RIEAE has being conducting a range of activities with an eye toward making a social contribution at the national level to practically solve these environmental issues, which have become complicated.  The coming age could suitable be called “The Century of Asia.” While not only China, but also other developing nations such as India and Southeast Asian countries, are making rapid economic progress, the manifestation of environmental issues attendant on the progress cannot be ignored. To improve Asia's position in the world, it is extremely important that we establish a resource-saving, sustainable society in which environmental measures are adopted. In light of this, Kyushu University, as a world-class university rich in knowledge on Asia, should play its role and fulfill its obligations.  From such a viewpoint, while deepening cooperation with industry, government, and academia, Kyushu University gathers excellent students and young researchers from throughout the world and promotes the development of young human resources through active human-resource exchanges and education for research. International exchanges that remain in one's memory will lead to international cooperation that will be recorded. We intend to fulfill our role as an educational base for the development of people who will lead the future. We look forward to your support and cooperation.
