Special Event "Dry Land, Dessert –Home of Yellow Dust–"

Arid Land Research Center of TOTTORI University and RIEAE jointly held the special event on Feb. 28-29 2012 at JR Hakata City in Fukuoka.

Dry land now accounts for over 40% in the world’s land area, in which one third of the world population, near 2 billion people are living. This event aimed to let the participants learn the mechanism of life and nature in dry land, and how the ecosystem functions in such harsh environment. Researchers presented their research activity about combating desertification and improvement of living condition in dry land, and showed how our life in Japan linked to arid land. Especially this event focused on “Home of Yellow Dust”, by introducing the situation in source regions of yellow dust, and the frontline of research.

Three members of Combating Desertification Group of RIEAE (Prof. Osamu Tadauchi, Prof. Kaoru Kashima, and Associate Prof. Renya Sato), gave lectures in this event.

This event was opened to public; many children and citizens enjoyed hands-on displays which they could learn the dry land life and the problems of desertification, by seeing, touching and feeling dessert sand and folk costumes of Mongolia.
