The rapid economic developments of China and South Korea have also brought about big gains for East Asia and Japan. However, there are enormous environmental damages such as: air pollution by gases emitted from automobile manufacturers, factories and power plants; contamination of rivers and soil by waste from factories and residences; desertification of the land due to expansion of the farmland accompanying increase in food demands; spread of pollution and environmental change of rivers and oceans caused by dam constructions due to increased demand of energy and agricultural water supplies; and so on. All of these are proceeding at the speed and scale which human beings have never experienced in our history before. The results of environmental deterioration will bring about damage throughout the world, including Japan, South Korea, and by extension, China. Environmental damages and economic developments are now being recognized as two sides of the same coin.

Kyushu University is a major research university nearest to the Chinese continent, and has many researchers who excel in environmental research. The Conference of Asian University Presidents meeting shows good track record for network formation. In order to systematize the individual researcher's environmental research as Kyushu University and to develop it further, we can take the advantages of such track record and conditions of location and form the Kyushu University East Asian Environmental Team.
